Good Friday Reflection: Honouring St. Joseph of Arimathea, Patron Saint of Funeral Service
Posted on: April 18, 2025

Today, on Good Friday, we remember the great sacrifice of Jesus Christ—His suffering, death, and the love He showed for the world. For those of us who work in funeral service, this day holds special meaning. It reminds us of the sacred work we are called to do.
In the Gospel, we read about a man named Joseph of Arimathea. He was a follower of Jesus, and after the crucifixion, he did something very brave. He went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Joseph gently took Jesus down from the cross, wrapped Him in a clean linen cloth, and placed Him in a new tomb that had been carved in the rock.
Joseph of Arimathea is known today as the patron saint of funeral directors. He showed great love, respect, and courage by caring for Jesus’ body with dignity. He did what many of us do every day—quietly, humbly, and with deep compassion. Like Joseph, funeral service professionals walk with grieving families in their most difficult moments. We handle sacred responsibilities, often behind the scenes, to ensure the dead are cared for and the living are comforted.
As we move from Good Friday into Holy Saturday, the quiet day of waiting, we might ask: Could this be our Saint’s Day? Holy Saturday is the day Jesus rested in the tomb. It is the day Joseph’s work was done. It’s a day full of silence, reverence, and hope—just like the space we hold for families every day.
So this Easter weekend, let’s take a moment to honour and pray for those in funeral service. Whether you are a director, embalmer, transfer staff, administrator, or grief support worker—thank you. Your work is holy. You carry the weight of sorrow with grace, and you help families find peace when it is needed most.
May St. Joseph of Arimathea continue to guide and bless you in your ministry. And may you feel Christ’s love in every act of kindness you offer.
Wishing you a blessed Good Friday and a peaceful Easter weekend.
